Today I reached book #50. It took me a little longer this year than last year to reach this mark, but 50 has always been my goal. I did make it to over 100 last year, so hopefully I'll do the same in 2010.

Beth- Can you give me a couple books you'd recommend for someone going into 8th grade? My sister actually loves to read but she likes reading vampire books over anything else. And the school she goes to doesn't emphasize reading very much :(. My mom is doing a trade with her this summer where she'll buy her one vampire book for every book of my mom's choosing she reads. We've been looking for books we think she'll like, but that just aren't about vampires. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteI have tons of books I could recommend. If she's into vampires and you want her to explore other areas, these are some possibilities that aren't too big of a leap from her preferred genre:
Graceling by Kristin Cashore - It's got a the romance that so many girls love, but an equally strong female protagonist
The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins - This book has blood and gore, but the protagonist is female so it's not essentially a "boy" book.
Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale - Shannon Hale does an amazing job retelling lesser known fairy tales. This book is my favorite of hers.
Impossible by Nancy Werlin - Very unusual story about a girl who has to do the tasks in the song Scarborough Fair or she'll go insane.
The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson - Story about a girl who awakes from a year long coma and doesn't remember who she is or why she was in a coma.
Coffeehouse Angel by Suzanne Selfors - If she likes vampires, maybe she'll like angels too?
Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson - Story about a girl struggling with anorexia. The story is haunting and beautifully written.
If I Stay by Gayle Forman - Story about a girl in a car accident who hovers over her comatose body in ICU trying to decide if she wants to live or die.
Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher - A girl commits suicide and leaves tapes behind for the people who drove her to do it.
