Hello everyone! So I missed last week's "It's Monday!" post because I was in Iceland. My husband and I had an amazing time there and I already wrote a few posts about it, one about our food adventures, and one Thoughts from Places video.
This past weekend I attended the Kids Read Comics event at the Ann Arbor District Library for the second year in a row. It was so much fun! I will definitely be going again next year.
I feel like I'm finally getting back on my reading game. Last school year really kicked my butt in terms of getting much reading done. Now that it's summer I feel like reading is enjoyable again because I don't have anything hanging over my head that makes me feel guilty for sitting down and reading instead of getting all that other stuff on my to-do list done.
So last week (and the week before), this is what I read and enjoyed:
A Curious Man: The Strange and Brilliant Life of Robert "Believe It Or Not" Ripley by Neal Thompson
A review of this one will be coming soon.
Graphic Novel:
Squish: Game On! by Jennifer and Matthew Holm
Audiobooks:
Hold Fast by Blue Balliett
Vive La Paris by Esme Raji Codell
Picture Books:
Goal! by Mina Javaherbin, illustrated by A.G. Ford
Bogart and Vinnie: A Completely Made-Up Story of True Friendship by Audrey Vernick, illustrated by Henry Cole
Last week I reviewed:
When You Were Here by Daisy Whitney
Currently Reading:
Giants Beware! by Jorge Aguirre and Rafael Rosado
Thomas Jefferson's Creme Brulee: How a Founding Father and His Slave James Hemings Introduced French Cuisine to America by Thomas J. Craughwell
Currently listening:
The Wig in the Window by Kristin Kittscher
Paris My Sweet: A Year in the City of Light (and Dark Chocolate) by Amy Thomas
Check out my current giveaway: The Keep by Veronica Wolff (ends 6/30)
So cool that you traveled to Iceland! How fun! A Curious Man and the Thomas Jefferson book both sound really interesting. How did you like the audiobook of Hold Fast? That book is such a celebration of language...I bet it could be brilliant on audio (but it also could be awful depending on narration). You certainly seem to have enjoyed your week of reading. I hope you can continue to read for enjoyment. Have a great reading week!
ReplyDeleteI loved Hold Fast as an audiobook. Bahni Turpin has become my favorite audiobook narrator (she's eclipsed Jim Dale) and she did an amazing job with this one.
DeleteI am going to have to check Bahni Turpin - always looking for a good narrator. Have you tried Katherine Kellgren? I could listen to her read the phone book.
DeleteHi Beth, I think I really need to read Wig in the Window. Bogart and Vinnie looks interesting too. I loved Hold Fast. Hope you re enjoying your summer!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds as if your summer is off to a wonderful start! Iceland sounds great. I just spoke to another person who was traveling there! Lots of good books here. The Jefferson book especially is interesting. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering the same as Andrea...how was the audio of Hold Fast? I loved seeing the language and wordplay, so I hope that translated well through the audio!
ReplyDeleteI'm curious about your Thoughts From Places talk...off to check it out for myself!

DeleteI always love hearing what you enjoy on audio! I've got Squish #4 and #5 in my near term reading stack! And the Jefferson book sounds super interesting. --Lorna
ReplyDeleteStill amazed that you went to Iceland! So fantastic. My class loved Goal! It was such an accessible book about play/soccer and the worry of bullies on the scene. Hold Fast must have been wonderful as an audio book.
ReplyDeleteYou have been quite the busy bee! I am looking forward to reading your posts this week. :)
