It's Monday! What are you reading? 9-1-14

Originally hosted by Sheila at Book Journey, Jen over at Teach Mentor Texts along with Kellee and Ricki at Unleashing Readers also host a kidlit version of It's Monday! What are You Reading?

My Monday posts are generally just a highlight of what I've been reading during the week so if you'd like to see all that I've been reading, follow my Goodreads page.

Happy Labor Day everyone! It's funny, at first when I was hired to teach at my new school I was kind of bummed that we started school before Labor Day, but now that we've got a couple weeks under our belts, I realized that I kind of like starting before Labor Day because back when I worked at a school that started the day after Labor Day, I was always working getting my classroom ready during this holiday weekend. This year, I can actually sit back and enjoy it because my classroom has been ready for a while now.

Despite how busy I've been with school, I managed to have a pretty good reading week.

I reviewed:

Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix

Picture books:

I'm My Own Dog by David Ezra Stein
What Do You Do with an Idea? by Kobi Yamada, illustrated by Mae Besom

Graphic novels:

Kids Are Weird: And Other Observations from Parenthood by Jeffrey Brown
Star Wars: Jedi Academy, Return of the Padawan by Jeffrey Brown
Sisters by Raina Telgemeier

I finished reading with my ears:

Life by Committee by Corey Ann Haydu
Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman

Currently reading:

Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson

Currently reading with my ears:

Guy in Real Life by Steve Brezenoff

Last week I also interviewed author Lenore Appelhans on the release date of her new book, Chasing Before.

On my teaching blog, I wrote:
Celebrate the unexpected
Looking on the bright side of life

  1. I may have to break down and get the Star Wars book. I didn't originally because my SW fans are VERY serious about the franchise! but I've had a lot of my lower readers, who aren't even interested in SW, ask for the book. Will have to rethink.

  3. Some great books and some I haven't heard of. How is Guy in Real Life?

    1. Think I'll likely abandon Guy in Real Life. I'm just not a fan of books about gaming. I should've known myself. But I thought I'd give it a try.

  4. Just finished Brown Girl Dreaming. Amazing but I wonder what students will think, especially if they don't have a strong background in that time period. Also still waiting on my copy of What Do You Do with an Idea?

  5. Just finished Brown Girl Dreaming this week too. Amazing but I wonder what students will think, especially if they don't have much background about the Civil Rights movement. Also still waiting on my copy of What Do You Do with an Idea?

  6. I just got I'm My Own Dog from the library. Hopefully I'll get to it soon. I read CeeCee a couple of years ago, and loved it!
I think we've always started before Labor Day but it seems to start earlier and earlier each year. I am glad that I'm not going into school for the first time tomorrow :)

  7. Horrorstor looks awesome! Right up the satirical alley with Beauty Queens.

Happy reading this week, and happy back to school! :)

  8. I really liked Sisters. Raina Telgemaier can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. Really want to read Brown Girl Dreaming. Mondays are usually my preparation day where I do all my reading and lesson planning for the week ahead, only today my kids are off from school and I'm struggling to find time and quiet to do anything!!

  9. Brown Girl a Dreaming is waiting for me on my kitchen counter. I have not been able to get to her yet and it is killing me. Kids are Weird and What Do You Do with an Idea? Look interesting to me.

  11. I have been waiting impatiently for Sisters. I had it from Netgalley, but it wouldn't download properly (illustrations, but no words) and now am waiting for my copy to arrive. Hmmph. So jealous. I'll be using What Do You Do With an Idea in class this week. Happy reading!

  14. My 12 year old girl is avidly waiting for Sisters to be available here in Singapore very soon, while I am waiting for Brown Girl Dreaming, which looks exactly like my kind of read. Star Wars Reads Day is coming up soon - and those Jeffrey Brown books would be the exact fit. :)
