It's Monday! What are you reading? Is a wonderful community of readers, teachers, and librarians. Hosted by Jen over at Teach Mentor Texts along with Kellee and Ricki at Unleashing Readers, participants share their reading adventures from the past week along with their reading plans for the week ahead.
My Monday posts are generally just a highlight of what I've been reading during the week so if you'd like to see all that I've been reading, follow my Goodreads page.
I know I've been talking about the Walden Award a lot lately, and this post is no different. :)
The 2020 Walden Award winners and finalists were featured on this month's ALAN Picks, so if you'd like to learn more about these wonderful books, check it out. Also, If you are a teacher, professor, or librarian and you love YA lit, consider applying for the 2021 Walden committee. The application deadline is June 5th.
Last week I reviewed:
I Think You're Wrong (But I'm Listening): A Guide to Grace-filled Political Conversations by Sarah Stewart Holland and Beth Silvers
I finished reading:
The Night Before Election Day by Natasha Wing, illustrated by Amy Wummer
I think had I read this book BEFORE the pandemic, it would have rang truer, but since election day is likely not to have the same excitement and joy that it has in previous years, it was almost painful to read this book today in May of 2020. |
Dancing at the Pity Party by Tyler Feder
In this graphic memoir, Tyler Feder does a beautiful job of balancing both the raw reality of grieving her mother with moments of levity and humor. Her soft, muted color palate helps keep her storytelling gentle and non-threatening for those who might find themselves triggered by their own grief, yet still pulls no punches with taking readers on her journey of devastating loss.
Currently reading:
Cloud and Wallfish by Anne Nesbet
I've been wanting to read this book for a long time because the Cold War is my favorite era of history and Berlin is my favorite city in the world so I'm not sure what took me so long to read it, but since it's only $0.99 on Kindle right now, I couldn't resist reading and talking about this book.
Currently (still) reading with my ears:
Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo
Please tell me "I think you're wrong" is as good as I want it to be. We DEFINITELY need more of that. Less name-calling. More listening. More respectful disagreements, thought out arguments, honest dispute, and possibly even changed minds that don't come from fear-mongering and hate. I'll be looking in to his one right now!
ReplyDeleteHere's my post for the week.
I Think You're Wrong (But I'm Listening) sounds like such an important book for the present political climate and I've heard good things about this one. I enjoyed Clap When You Land, but in the very beginning of the audiobook, I got confused between the characters since their voices sounded kinda similar. Once I got them sorted out, it was really wonderful. LOL And thanks for the heads-up on the kindle deal for Cloud and Wallfish. Have a wonderful reading week, Beth!
ReplyDeleteDancing at the Pity Party is one I've been meaning to order. I just can't keep any kind of graphic novel on my shelves. I'm reading Clap When You Land right now too. Liking it but I think I like both of her other books better. I do appreciate how ambitious this one is!
ReplyDeleteDancing at the Pity Party looks like a good book to read during these days of uncertainty and loss. Everyone is going through so much grief these days, this book seems like it would be relevant and good way to express it. I'll definitely have to look for it. Thanks for sharing and have a great week!
ReplyDeleteCloud and Wallfish doesn't circulate well in my library, sadly. I'm a little curious about Dancing at the Pity Party; my mom died in April, but she would be so angry with me if I were sad! Just not what we do. That Mom voice really sticks with me.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Cloud and Wallfish very much. I showed the fright of the times very well. Dancing at the Pity Party is on my list. I've seen others who liked it, too. And then "I think you're wrong" should be on everyone's list, yet I have doubts. Thanks for sharing, Beth.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Cloud and Wallfish also. I just downloaded Clap When You Land and have it ready to go as my next audiobook. I'm not sure about Dancing at the Pity Party for me these days. I have added it to my list to read for later. Thanks for all these great titles Beth.
ReplyDeleteI have had Cloud and Wallfish on a shelf in my house for a while, but I keep getting ARCs to read and have been trying to get through them before they release. Maybe in the summer I will get to that one, as I enjoy that period of history too. Thanks for the reminder, have a great week.
ReplyDeleteCloud and Wallfish is a book that is overlooked, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI think it's very impressive when authors can write in multiple genres or formats. I did think of that when I read Julie Berry's picture book!
